Eastern chipmunks are fascinating creatures that thrive in protected forest reserves. These small rodents are easily recognized by the black and white stripes running down their backs and their endlessly curious nature. Chipmunks are vital for forest ecosystems, as they help with seed dispersal and soil aeration. In reserves, visitors might see them scurrying between trees, cheeks puffed out with nuts or berries.

One of their most intriguing behaviors is their food storage. Chipmunks create elaborate underground burrows with separate chambers for nesting, food storage, and waste. These tiny engineers can collect and store hundreds of seeds and nuts, which not only helps them survive harsh winters but also supports forest regeneration. By forgetting some of their stored seeds, they unintentionally plant new trees.
