American Bison: Giants of the Plains

The American bison, the largest land mammal in North America, is a symbol of strength and resilience. Once roaming the Great Plains in massive herds, these majestic creatures were nearly driven to extinction in the 19th century due to overhunting and habitat destruction. Today, reserves are essential in protecting and restoring bison populations.

Bison are easily recognizable by their massive heads, humped shoulders, and shaggy brown coats. Despite their size, they are surprisingly agile and can run up to 56 km/h (35 mph). In reserves, bison roam freely in grasslands and prairies, grazing on grasses and playing a critical role in shaping their ecosystems by promoting plant growth and creating habitats for other species.
